Jen Hardy is here with the phenomenal Roberta Campbell, who will share her wisdom on finding beauty, boosting confidence, and the unexpected role of haircuts in clear communication. Let’s dive right in!

Haircuts: More Than Just a Snip-Snip:

Who would’ve thought that getting a haircut could be so much more than just a simple trim? Roberta Campbell, our guest superstar hairstylist, believes that getting those locks in shape is all about effective communication. Remember that time when you asked for an inch and a half to be cut off, but ended up losing twelve? Yeah, we’ve all been there. Turns out, perception isn’t always reality, especially when it comes to measurements. But fear not, my friends! Roberta has some nifty tricks up her sleeve to avoid any future mishaps.

Measure Twice, Cut Once:

Roberta used to have combs with measurements to ensure accurate communication with her clients. It’s all about clarity, folks! But if you’re wondering why she isn’t carrying a toolbox full of rulers these days, here’s the scoop. She’s either whipping out an actual ruler or starting the haircut and showing the client the progress along the way. Brilliant, right? No more anxiety-inducing surprises at the end of your salon visit.

Trimming with TLC:

Sometimes, we’re hesitant to let go of those precious ends, fearing that it’ll be a drastic change. But worry not, my fabulous friends! Roberta gently explains the necessity of trimming while showing the minimal amount that will be cut. In fact, you might not even notice the hair on the floor afterwards! Time to embrace the joy of healthy, luscious hair without the fear of drastic transformations.

Beyond Hair: Boosting Confidence:

Feeling fabulous isn’t just about the right hairstyle. It starts from within, my friends. Roberta agrees, sharing her secrets for feeling your best, inside and out. From incorporating yoga and meditation into her routine to embracing clean eating, she’s all about spreading the importance of self-care and overall wellness.

Beauty From the Inside Out:

Roberta spills the tea on achieving that natural glow, and it isn’t just about slathering on products. Proper nutrition plays a key role in healthy skin, hair, and nails. But forget those iffy biotin supplements; the jury’s still out on their effectiveness. Instead, she focuses on hydration, including those electrolytes, to keep us glowing from within.

A Mirror, Self-Love, and Natural Beauty:

Roberta is all about embracing our natural beauty and finding the features we love. Say goodbye to societal pressures and hello to self-acceptance, my fabulous friends! Who needs plastic surgery when you can rock that gorgeous gray hair or use simple beauty tricks like lemon for spots and baking soda for pearly whites? It’s all about enhancing what you’ve got and feeling confident in your own skin.

TRANSCRIPT for "Looking Fabulous After Fifty"

Jen Hardy [00:00:11]:

Welcome to the fabulous over 50 podcast. We are here to uplift, encourage, and empower women to live their best lives. I’m your host, Jen Hardy, and today we’re going to do that by talking to Roberta Campbell. She is a hairstylist extraordinaire, but not only that, she is a bestselling author, a public speaker, and she is a phenomenal woman. And today, she is going to help us find our beauty. You know, I know you feel beautiful on the inside, and so do I. And I know I am more confident in the way I look than I’ve ever been in my whole life, but there are certain things that I’m still trying to navigate that have altered a little bit since I’ve well, you know, past 50. And so I wanted Roberta to come on and talk to us about some great ways that we can do things that are simple, cost effective, and will just make us feel fabulous. So here she is. Roberta, thank you so much for joining me today and helping us look our fabulous best. I so appreciate it.

Roberta Campbell [00:01:24]:

Oh, my gosh. Thank you so much, Jen, for having me. It’s a pleasure to be on here.

Jen Hardy [00:01:30]:

Thank you. I’m so excited to have this conversation because this is my 24th year homeschooling, so I spent a lot of years not really doing my hair and makeup because I wasn’t really going out. And now I’m in front of more people, and I don’t know, I guess maybe I don’t know if I care more. I’m trying to hide more, maybe a balance of the two. But you look absolutely gorgeous, I have to say. I would look at you and think you’re, like, 30 years old. So I want all the secrets. How do you do it? What do you do?

Roberta Campbell [00:02:05]:

Oh, my gosh. Well, thank you so much. That is so sweet of you. First of all, I have to tell you, I feel young. I think just, like, getting it in my head. It’s not a number. I am not a number. It doesn’t define me, doesn’t mean that I have to wear my hair short. Does it mean that I have to? Right? Like, is there an age people would be like, okay, they come into the hair salon and they’d say, am I too old for long hair? And I’m like, okay. I didn’t know there were rules to any of this. So what makes you feel good? I think that’s the biggest thing. And I’ll tell you what. I was raised like my mom. She looked so good. Every time she left the house, probably even around the house, she was very into just her hair looking good and having makeup on. So partially that’s kind of how I was brought up, and I just got into that habit, and I always did. I didn’t care what I was going out to do. I would have my makeup and my hair done. But I want to tell you something now. I think it’s more of a natural look is in. I think it’s more important to just enhance your features, find what you love about yourself. And I’ll tell you something, when you look in the mirror, tell yourself, boy, let’s not wait on somebody else to tell us. So the one thing I’ll look in the mirror and I’m like, I like my eyes not just looking in the mirror, but when you look at a picture of yourself, how many of us immediately go to, oh, my God, look at whatever it is. Why didn’t I no, stop it. We’re going to stop it now. We’re going to put that in the past, and we’re going to say, okay, from today on, I’m going to look at this picture, this photo, and I’m going to find out what I love, find out what I love. Because there’s only certain things about us that we can change anyway. But finding what you love about yourself is so important. And honestly, I think, gosh, I actually quit highlighting my hair. I just went natural with the hair now, okay? So I have hair extensions, so I’m very fortunate. I’ve been in the beauty industry. I’ve been a hairstylist for a long, long time, and I’ve learned some little secrets, and I went into teaching hair extensions for a long time to other stylists. So this was my thing. And they have some that I can actually do myself. So I just did these. I threw in some highlights. And look, it’s really long. I don’t think I’ve ever left it this long before. And I’m like, should I cut this? I don’t know. What do I feel like?

Jen Hardy [00:05:13]:

It looks great and I would never know it’s. Extensions. That’s an amazing thing. So is that something that anyone can do or do? You really need to go to a salon and have it done?

Roberta Campbell [00:05:23]:

Oh, gosh, you better go to a salon.

Jen Hardy [00:05:26]:

Okay.

Roberta Campbell [00:05:26]:

It’s even difficult for me to do, very difficult for me to do to myself. Sometimes they don’t stay in all that well, so no, you don’t want to do that.

Jen Hardy [00:05:38]:

Okay.

Roberta Campbell [00:05:41]:

Now they do have the little clip ins, and there’s like a halo thing that you can do yourself. Sure, you can play around with that, but not the ones like this. I can shampoo and they stay in and everything. But look, I never had nice hair. My daughter one time even said, mom, how come when you were young, you never had a ponytail? I’m like, Because I didn’t have enough hair. My hair was so thin and so fine. So I never had long hair. So for me, I’m like, I can have it now then, okay? I don’t care how old I am. I’m going to have it. I love it.

Jen Hardy [00:06:20]:

It looks beautiful. And that’s another thing I was going to ask you, too. So I’ve always had fine hair. Yeah, fine hair. That’s the word. But now it’s thinned. So I had surgery, and I lost about half my hair. And usually it comes back, but then I had a couple more physical things happen. And my hair is like we’re just done. And I know with a lot of women, as we get older, some of us do lose some of our hair. So do you have any tricks for women who maybe are noticing that it’s a little bit thinner than it used to be?

Roberta Campbell [00:06:54]:

Let’s see. Well, first of all, I’ve heard now this one I can’t tell you for sure, but I know that everything let me tell you this, everything starts with nutrition. So good nutrition is always the basis for everything. And that’s your skin, your hair, your nails. Now there’s sometimes we just can’t good nutrition is not going to grow a head full of hair right? Now, some people say that biotin is like the best supplement to take for gaining new hair. I can’t tell you that for sure. And also, I think every supplement is not created equal. So there’s some research to do on that one. That one I can’t confirm. But I’ll tell you something. My mom lost most of her hair due to some issues. And I said, okay, mom, this is what we’re going to do. So we’re going to shampoo with this. Now, I like nioxin, and it’s a hair loss, a hair thinning product line. So I still use it myself. My mom uses it. Even my daughter uses it, who has a head full of hair. She loves it, too. She likes how it makes her hair feel. So I said, all right, we’re going to shampoo with this then, because I don’t care how much hair you have, you’re still going to shampoo it because it’s the most important thing is getting that blood circulation to the scalp. So a lot of people, we do just a real soft, easy shampoo, and then we’re done. Compared to when you go into the salon and they’re giving you a nice right, a nice, good shampoo. So I said, what you’re going to do is you’re actually going to take the conditioner part of it, which is called scalp therapy, and you’re going to massage it into your scalp. I mean, you’re going to move that scalp, and you’re going to leave that scalp therapy on for a little bit. And you can feel it. I don’t know if you’ve ever used something like this before. It’s very minty and feels like your scalp is breathing. That’s awesome. That’s what you want even kind of makes it a little red. Well, think about it. The blood circulating, so it’s getting that going. And she would leave it on for a little bit. And even if she didn’t do that daily, I said, go in and get your fingers in and massage your scalp. Do a nice like that. Get in there. And she did. And I’m telling you what her hair grew back so fast. She didn’t ever have a lot of hair, but it grew back so nicely, so fast, I could not believe it. So definitely, by far, that is the most important thing. The other thing that we believe helps, and this helps a lot of things is red light therapy near infrared. So I have a panel in my bathroom here, actually, and it hangs up like behind a door. So I stand in front of it, and you’ll get a little red. It’s not harmful. You don’t wear goggles. It’s not like a tanning bed, anything like that. Because think about it again. It’s circulating, getting that blood vessels going. It is supposed to create collagen naturally. So I don’t take any type of collagen, peptide, powder, whatever, however it comes. I don’t do that. I try to look at other ways to get that. And I’ve done extensive research on red light therapy. It’s been around for a long, long time. It’s a little hard to explain scientifically, but when I kept doing research and kept doing research and I saw all of this, everything that it does, even supposed to help with if you have scars, scarring, supposed to help with even fat loss or cellulite, which I mean, don’t get me wrong, it may help. I still got some. So I’m not like it takes it all away. But yeah, because I’ve been using it now for probably three years, and I really think it has helped my complexion because there’s nothing else that I’ve been doing differently. Now, I did change skincare lines, and I feel like products are important, but they’re not like, the most important. Hydration. Okay, go back. Hydration is extremely important for your skin, for your hair, for everything. But you do know it’s not just about water. It’s about the electrolytes. So I keep reading so much about this that you need the electrolytes, actually the salt or the sodium in the water. I can’t give you professional advice on that, but I’m going to tell you, I just buy coconut water, and then I add it to my regular water. And so that has electrolytes in it, and hopefully that’s helping also. But back to this skincare, I did switch to this SkinCeuticals. I noticed too, like, when I first started using it, I was like, whoa, I can kind of feel some tingling or something. I’m like yes. My esthetician at the salon, she’s like, we got to wake your face up. She said, you have, like, thick skin. I go, I do. I was like, okay. And I believe that too. You know how we were talking about waking your scalp up to breathe for circulation? I think you need to wake your skin up too, whether that’s through exfoliation or chemical peels. I’ve heard chemical peels is the way to go. You’ll feel some burn, some tingling. I’ve never done the full out, like chemical peel where you can’t leave the house for a week or something. Yeah, I’ve never done that.

Jen Hardy [00:13:39]:

I heard there’s a thing with, like, little needles, and you rub that on your skin, and then it’s supposed to do something. I don’t know. I’ve been afraid to try it. Have you tried that?

Roberta Campbell [00:13:50]:

Just a little home thing that I bought, which it hurt. I mean, I could imagine. Microblading, I think it’s called micro.

Jen Hardy [00:13:59]:

Yeah, I think that’s it.

Roberta Campbell [00:14:02]:

Something like that. Yeah. So, yeah, I could definitely see where that would help as well. But I’ve never had that done professionally.

Jen Hardy [00:14:14]:

Yeah, I haven’t either. I’m afraid to try a lot of these things, but they sound really good. What about and I know your thing is hair, but we’re talking about skin, so this is good skin. Okay. So my neck has changed the year I turned 55 this year, and there’s something about that that has changed the skin under my eyes and the skin on my neck. So do you have any suggestions? I mean, obviously, getting a lift. I don’t know. It’s tempting. But aside from that, that would make us feel like we got one without the knife.

Roberta Campbell [00:14:47]:

That’s funny. Okay, so I felt like my face started looking a little better, and then I was like, oh, my God, my neck. So I thought, I got to get something for my neck. So actually, I’ve started to do that a little differently. I’m just like, Hurry, hurry, hurry. No, it’s like, don’t go when you’re putting stuff on. Go up with it. And I did start using a new thing from Skin suitables. It’s a neck treatment. And between that and the red light therapy, I feel like I’ve noticed some difference. So I don’t know. I think under the eyes let me tell you what, if anybody finds something for that, they better pass it along, because I think that’s the hardest thing to do anything with. I’ve never heard of a whole lot. I think there’s maybe laser. I think there’s, like, a type of lasering that’s supposed to be good, and if anybody can find anything to get.

Jen Hardy [00:15:58]:

Oh, this arm thing. Well, I always tell people, and people always think it’s so silly, but you know why the queen waves like this, right? Like, really slow? Is because if you do it fast, it looks totally different. Yeah. But I did find one thing for under my eyes that I will share with you. Oh, my gosh. And it seems to make a huge difference. It’s a brand called Number Seven, and it’s a wrinkle filler. And so I have a line between my eyes, and then I have a few other lines on my face, and when I put that on, it reflects the light differently. And also, the concealer I put under my eyes doesn’t go in the lines as much when I use that. And I mean, I use, like, the size of a pinhead under my eyes. You barely use any. But that is one thing, and it tricks other people’s eyes. Really? It doesn’t change what’s happening with me. But yeah, it seems to make a difference, especially if I’m doing something like this.

If I’m on camera, it’s a difference. But like I said, once, I wash it off, but that’s okay, because right now my mom had a plastic surgery go wrong. And so I’m very leery of having that done because it was a lifelong issue for her. That is icky, and I won’t tell it right now, but it makes me afraid to do anything like that because that’s my family. So what if that happened to me? Kind of a thing. But this is great. Okay. And I know a lot of women. I know I was told oh, my goodness, when I turned 30, I was told by a family member, when you turn 40, you have to cut your hair short, because every woman cannot have long hair past 40. And I thought, I love it when these women have this thick gray hair, like in a braid. There’s something about that I just think is so beautiful. They’re looking fabulous over fifty!

And you were saying that you stopped dyeing your hair. I did. I have white around my face. I don’t have gray. It’s white. And so what I was doing is, like, bleach highlighting it. I was having that done, and then I thought, Wait a minute, it’s the same color as my white hair. So we did a little bit of that and just let my white grow out. And now I pretend like my white is a highlight, and I move on with my life. And the only problem I have, because it’s me, this is how I’ve been made, right, is that other people think I’m my children’s grandma. And I’m not a fan of people telling me how cute my grandkids are. It happens all the time, and it makes me so sad. And that’s really the only thing, because otherwise, whatever, I can age gracefully, and I’m fine with that. But my kids are like, she is not a grandma.

Roberta Campbell [00:18:41]:

Oh, my God. And that’s so crazy, too.

Jen Hardy [00:18:45]:

Yeah, it’s really bizarre, because I feel like, I don’t know, but I guess out in the wild, I look older than I do on TV or on the screen. I don’t know.

Roberta Campbell [00:18:56]:

It’s interesting, but a lot of people are doing that. A lot of people are wearing their hair light, like, bleaching it out, and then we’re toning it, unless it’s starting to kind of fade a little bit. But, I mean, we’ve been doing that a lot. Everybody wants that platinum look.

Jen Hardy [00:19:16]:

Oh, my gosh. Are these girls that are, like, 17 with gray hair because they get it dyed gray? I know my son, my middle son, when he was 18, had gray hair because he had it dyed, and I was like, here I am dying mine blonde like yours, and you’re dying yours gray like mine. And yeah, it’s so funny.

Roberta Campbell [00:19:33]:

Oh, my goodness.

Jen Hardy [00:19:34]:

Yeah. I’m looking at your extension so you can’t see if you’re listening to the podcast, but you would never know. So this is definitely something to consider if your hair is not as thick as you want, because seriously, you wouldn’t know. And you go to a professional, somebody that does that. Here’s a great thing to ask you. Let’s say someone is in a new town or they’re not happy with their hairstylist. What’s a good way to find a good person that’s compatible? Because I know I was just talking to someone else about this the other day, and they said it doesn’t matter who I go to, the person’s going to do to my hair what they want to do, never what I want to do. So how do you open up that dialogue with someone to say, I know that you know your job, you know it’s going to work and not work for my hair, but we need to work together instead of unless I tell you, do what you want. Right?

Roberta Campbell [00:20:32]:

Yeah. And I think that’s where we need to come in and have communication is so important. Now, I will tell you, people will bring in these photos, these pictures of this model or perfect, amazing hair. That is, every hair is so perfect in this picture. Nothing is out of place and they have this Balliage and it’s curled perfect. And I’m like, okay, I’m not afraid, first of all, to say, look with this, if I do this color, it’s not going to look like this unless you style it like this. Every picture that I have seen of Baliage is curled like a nice soft wave. That’s how you see the colors in it. So I’m just letting you know, if you don’t style your hair, it’s not going to look like that. That’s why also it’s just so well, communication. That’s why communication is so important. But so now with a client, I’ll be like, if I think that something would look better, I’m going to recommend it. But if they don’t want it, then that’s their opinion. They’re the ones that should be able to make the decision. But maybe say to your stylist, like, hey, I was thinking about this, but what do you think? Like, trying to get their opinion, because I’ll say, I’m like, oh, that’s really nice. Now, what I want you to know, first of all, you are not going to look exactly like this. We are going to do something similar to this. But not everybody’s hair lightens the same. You have very fine hair. This person in this picture has a lot of hair. I’m just flat out honest. And I think you need to just ask somebody, say, look, just be honest with me. Will my hair do this? Will it look like this? Can we get it similar to this? What do we need to do that’s really good?

Jen Hardy [00:22:45]:

Advice. Yeah. And I think the thing is, a lot of us I can speak for myself, we don’t want to come across too bossy or whatever, but I think when it comes to and so we’re just like, oh, whatever, and then we go home and we cry, right? So don’t do that. It’s okay to say not be combative, but you’re doing your job and to the best of your ability. It’s okay for me to say, okay, but please don’t do this. This is the thing I don’t want or be sure that whatever, it’s okay to communicate that, right? I mean, you want to know what the person wants. You don’t want them to go home and be sad, right?

Roberta Campbell [00:23:23]:

Exactly. Okay, so, for instance, yesterday I had this lady in my chair, and she goes, take about a good inch and a half off. So I’m like, here’s the thing. Unless I get a ruler out, a lot of times their inch and a half does not look like the inch and a half in my mind. And we used to have these combs that actually had the measurements on it. And so I’ll pull it out a lot of times, or what I’ll do is I’ll start cutting and I’ll take it around. I pulled it around. I showed my client yesterday, she’s like, oh, twice as much as that. I’m like, okay, instead of me doing a whole haircut twice, oh, don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to do that either, right? So that’s why communication is so important. And then I’ll say, Look, I’m just going to barely just trim your ends. Because they’re like, oh, I don’t want to cut, but I’m like, Your ends really need it. So then I’ll cut a little bit and I’ll bring it around and I’ll show it to them. I’m like, I just want you to see because it might feel like I took more off, but I’m taking off like a quarter of an inch. I’m showing you right here. You probably won’t even see the hair on the floor.

Jen Hardy [00:24:44]:

Oh, gosh.

Roberta Campbell [00:24:45]:

Communication is key.

Jen Hardy [00:24:48]:

Okay, that’s really good to know. And it does depend on your hair type. I remember being a teenager in the 80s, where big hair was the thing, and I went to this girl, and she had very thick, naturally, like the perfect perm, but it was her natural hair. And I’m like, I want what you’ve got. And she’s like, Sweetheart, you’ll never have what I have. I was born with this. And I was so mad because I was 17. I didn’t know, right? But now I look back and I’m like, well, yeah, because this is not going to turn out to be that, but in hindsight, very much appreciate her honesty. So that is a really good thing. Now, let’s say somebody has been coloring their hair for so long, and those roots, they’ve really changed, and they think, okay, I want to grow my hair out to a natural color. What are some ways they can do that without having that line?

Roberta Campbell [00:25:47]:

So if the hair is like, let’s.

Jen Hardy [00:25:49]:

Say it’s graying gray, it’s graying, and they’ve been doing it like a nice brown like they always had, but then all of a sudden, those roots are so different than the rest, and they’re thinking like, I did like, okay, I’m done. Mine was easy because I have blonder hair.

Roberta Campbell [00:26:03]:

But yeah, it’s definitely either highlights or low lights, depending on what you’re looking for. So most people have to have just some highlights put in there and even a few foils, a few highlights here and there for any type of color just makes color look more natural looking. So typically that’s what it is. Unless I have a client right now that actually is letting her hair grow out, her natural color. And so she’s like, what do I need to do? I go, well, we’re just going to take it one little step at a time. I think you’re going to be okay for a little bit. So we’ve been doing a color retouch with highlights, but it still looks pretty good. I said, See, you just will take it one haircut at a time. So now she comes, like, every six weeks just to get a haircut. And she’s like, do I need that? Oh, she wants it all to just grow out now. And I’m like, well, it’s going to take a while. Yeah, that’s why you’re better off. Some people are like, let me just let it grow out. And I’m like, well, that can take years.

Jen Hardy [00:27:17]:

Yeah. If you have long hair, it’s going to take a really long time.

Roberta Campbell [00:27:20]:

It’s going to take a while. So instead, let’s make that color look more natural. And typically that’s through some type of foil, whether it’s highlight, low light, whatever that may be, for sure, yeah. And you don’t have to do it every time. You may have to do it one time, who knows? Okay, but with your hair, do you use like, a platinum blonde shampoo or anything?

Jen Hardy [00:27:49]:

I don’t right now. I do sometimes, but I am doing the collagen thing. I do the collagen shakes. And that has made a big difference, not in the color, obviously, but in the shine. My hair is shiny now, and I’ve gotten a little bit back. I’m losing less, and so that’s good.

Roberta Campbell [00:28:08]:

Yeah.

Jen Hardy [00:28:09]:

But I noticed when I go out in the sun now, it’s like, shiny, which I like, that yeah, it doesn’t hurt. And it’s protein, and I need protein. So yeah, I just have a smoothie. I’ve had the same okay. I’ve had the same breakfast for almost eight years now. Yeah, but I’ve changed my protein into a collagen because I think can’t hurt. Probably it wouldn’t hurt to do. But I don’t have, like, the yellowy in mine.

Roberta Campbell [00:28:36]:

It’s just right.

Jen Hardy [00:28:37]:

Well, that’s the sunshine. You can see how white.

Roberta Campbell [00:28:39]:

It yeah, it’s beautiful.

Jen Hardy [00:28:41]:

Thank you.

Roberta Campbell [00:28:42]:

So beautiful. Some people need that. I’ll tell you what, even like my dad, because he has really gray white hair. And every once in a while I said, now you don’t want to do this every time you shampoo, but once a week, once every other week, use this purple shampoo because it’ll help take out that yellow.

Jen Hardy [00:29:03]:

Yeah, see, interestingly. In the back of my hair, I do have the yellow. I don’t know why. And I had honestly forgotten about that purple shampoo, see, so if you’re listening, you definitely want to do that because it does make a difference. It really does.

Roberta Campbell [00:29:17]:

And I don’t know what this just kind of reminded me here, too, but I’ve never done a lot of really expensive things. But I was just thinking, one of the things I wanted to say is baking soda. Okay? I use baking soda. I don’t do teeth whiteners. I’ve done it in the past and I won’t do it ever again. All I do is add baking soda. I’ll brush my teeth with baking soda, then I’ll brush them with regular toothpaste. Really? And so if you’re looking to whiten.

Jen Hardy [00:29:53]:

Your teeth because your teeth do look really bright.

Roberta Campbell [00:29:56]:

Yeah, thank you.

Jen Hardy [00:29:58]:

And they look naturally bright. See, that’s the other thing. I feel like if your teeth are so much whiter than your eyes, it makes your eyes not look right. Right. But yours look like a very naturally pretty bright. So that’s good to know.

Roberta Campbell [00:30:12]:

Thank you. And yeah, I like my coffee, which I would love to quit drinking, but yeah, every once in a while using just baking soda. Also, you can use baking soda as an exfoliant for your face. So just baking soda and water make a little paste in your hands. And that’s what I use for an exfoliator. I mean, you can’t get much cheaper than that, girl.

Jen Hardy [00:30:38]:

I was thinking that same thing. You cannot, and it’s not bad for you.

Roberta Campbell [00:30:43]:

I know.

Jen Hardy [00:30:44]:

You just blew my mind right now. I’m so excited to go try this.

Roberta Campbell [00:30:49]:

Here’s another thing. There’s a couple of brown spots on this side and I was like, I hate these. I can’t stand. I mean, they were just age spots or sunspots or whatever we want to call them. It made me so mad. I’m like, what can I do? And somebody said lemon. Just take a lemon and just keep rubbing on it every day. And I was like, okay. I don’t know, it’s kind of a pain, I guess. I’m going to embrace them because honestly, once you go back out in the sun, they’re probably going to come back out. And besides some type of very expensive laser or something like that, they’re there. And you know what? They’re me.

Jen Hardy [00:31:31]:

It’s me. That’s part of the whole thing, I think. And that’s part of the whole thing. Why I want to do this podcast is so that we. Can hear each other talking about it and talking about the reality and learning how to embrace the things that we were always told were bad and wrong. Right. I was talking to somebody and she’s actually working on and she’s fought and some company has agreed to remove the words antiaging from their products because she’s like, Antiaging? You’re like, anti what? We are, right? Because we’re all aging. It could be, I don’t know the effects of aging or whatever, but she’s like, no, it’s almost an attack. And I thought, well, okay, I haven’t seen it that way and that’s not a battle that I’m going to jump in. But at the same time, I think we hear these messages all the time. If you have those spots, you’re bad. If you have wrinkles, it’s bad. If you have whatever and it’s ugly and it’s whatever and I think it’s life. And I think we need to find the beauty in all of it and we can enhance it. Like you’re saying, take what you’ve got and enhance it.

Roberta Campbell [00:32:41]:

Yeah. I will tell you, I know that stress plays a really big part on how we age. And my recommendation is to just chill out. I’m like, really? Oh my gosh, I used to be so uptight. Everything had to be perfect and it was. So I didn’t waste a lot of time. I never want to say that, but okay, I’m not going to waste any more time cleaning a clean house or worrying about that type of thing. So seriously, I think that is one thing, is I’ve learned to just relax and I started doing yoga and meditation, gosh only about a year or so ago. And I know I could do so much better, but I am doing this and I will keep improving all of the time. But yeah, I found this yoga studio not far from here. So I do hot yoga. Some of like today was like warm yoga. I don’t know what they call it, but it wasn’t the hot hot and it’s good. Detoxification different ways of doing that. Also getting that just yucky stuff out of your body. And I know there’s so many different ways you can do this, but I think that that hot yoga has really helped. And I also try to do gosh, I’ve tried like lemon water, just warm lemon water is so good for you again. Boy, can’t get much cheaper than that, right? I know. Come on. That’s not done with my whole diet too. The way that I eat, I eat just as clean as I can. Not 100%, but I’m fairly plant based maybe. That’s probably helped a lot too, I’m sure in my complexion and everything. Oh, yeah, I was eating pretty bad a few years ago.

Jen Hardy [00:35:08]:

Yeah.

Roberta Campbell [00:35:08]:

So I cleaned. That all.

Jen Hardy [00:35:11]:

Have a I have a question because you have hair extensions and you’re talking about doing hot yoga and I’m guessing that it’s sweaty so can you wash your hair often with those, and how long do they last?

Roberta Campbell [00:35:22]:

So jen, that is just so funny that you just said that, because that is the one thing that has given me a little problem. Not problem, but the thing about hot yoga. I swear, you guys, I don’t understand this part of it, but when you sweat, it doesn’t stink, it doesn’t smell, nobody does. It’s a different kind of sweat. I don’t know. And they have a humidifier in the room, too, so it’s so good for your skin. I don’t know. But yeah, I come out of there and I’m like, oh, my gosh, my hair. Now, look, I grew up in the 80s in the big hair days, and I just like hairspray. I would tease my hair. I don’t know how anybody goes out without hairspray. It’s just something I’ve always done. And now that I’ve been doing the hot yoga, it’s like, god, I got to lay off the hairspray because if not, it’ll get sticky.

Jen Hardy [00:36:28]:

Yeah.

Roberta Campbell [00:36:29]:

And I have to shampoo my hair more often. So hair extensions are better if you shampoo, like, once a week, maybe twice, that’s it, no more. And now that I’ve been doing this, I’ve had to shampoo them a little more often, and I did notice that. Yeah, it was like affecting the hair extensions. Okay, the only thing so if you don’t use product, you’re fine. Some of the people will say, look, that sweat that you’re sweating in hot yoga, as I said, it’s not dirty and stinky. You just rinse off and you could I mean, don’t worry, I still use soap.

Jen Hardy [00:37:12]:

Put on your hair. Yeah. Well, see, this is all new information to me, and I hope if you’re listening, I feel like this is gold. From the lemon water to the non stinky yoga sweat, we’re learning lots of things today.

Roberta Campbell [00:37:26]:

Baking soda. I mean, gosh, I know. I guess, too, it’s the last few years I’ve just had to find those little ways. I haven’t had the extra money to spend on not hair products, but facial products and all of that, so I’ve had to learn other ways of doing things.

Jen Hardy [00:37:53]:

That’s a lot of us the last few years. Right. And things are crazy right now. The prices of things have changed so much. So this is great. All right, so before we go, do you have any last tidbits that you think would be really good for people to know?

Roberta Campbell [00:38:07]:

Gosh, let’s see. Man, I feel like I hit so many good.

Jen Hardy [00:38:13]:

I think you did. I think it just has been a gold mine.

Roberta Campbell [00:38:17]:

Well, I think the most important thing was don’t look at your age as a number. It doesn’t really matter all the time. I just say I feel younger now than I did. Oh, my goodness. I’m going to tell you probably ten or 20 years ago, and it is never too late. It is never too late to make changes in your life in any way. And that’s health, wellness, longevity. I was just talking to a client about that, and I said, look, I’m not accepting it. I know there’s been so much research done, and I know that I can stay young and healthy, maybe not be able to do all the things I used to, but look at what you can do. And I used to work out way too hard and starve myself, and I quit doing it. And I’m healthier now than ever. Don’t get on a scale. Who cares? Like, numbers on the scale, end of age and all that. Doesn’t matter. How do you feel?

Jen Hardy [00:39:33]:

Yeah, exactly.

Roberta Campbell [00:39:34]:

Life’s too short. Enjoy every day. And when I say splurging too, I don’t splurge much just because I just don’t like how I feel after. I can’t eat much ice cream or cake or anything like that. I don’t want to splurge. It makes me feel yucky. And don’t get on anybody if they don’t want to.

Jen Hardy [00:40:00]:

Right. And find those healthy things that you can splurge on that are good for you know, there’s so many good.

Roberta Campbell [00:40:11]:

Right.

Jen Hardy [00:40:11]:

You’re right. You got if somebody if somebody says, oh, my gosh, I want Roberta to do my hair. What state are you in?

Roberta Campbell [00:40:20]:

I am in Cincinnati, Ohio. But I only work three days right now because I’m doing a lot of other things. I’ve got my coaching and speaking engagements and all of these other things. So it’s going to be less and less, most likely in the hair salon as I branch into other things. That’s why I’m saying it’s not too late to change things in your life.

Jen Hardy [00:40:51]:

It is never too late. So if someone wants to reach out to you, how can they best find.

Roberta Campbell [00:40:55]:

Um why do I want to say.

Jen Hardy [00:41:01]:

Wherever. It’s okay.

Roberta Campbell [00:41:04]:

I feel like I’m everywhere right now but Facebook. Roberta Campbell and I went back to my maiden name just this year after, like, I don’t know, 14 years.

Jen Hardy [00:41:15]:

Congratulations on that.

Roberta Campbell [00:41:17]:

Yeah, thank you. I had to wait till I was ready, but yeah, you’ll probably leave some things on here, too, but that would probably be the best. Roberta Campbell at Facebook and Instagram. Everywhere else, email.

Jen Hardy [00:41:37]:

I’ll have links in the show notes and on the website. So if you want to see what she’s doing and what she’s got going on and the coaching and the speaking and all the things, and find out some great beauty tips because oh, my. Yeah.

Roberta Campbell [00:41:50]:

And I will tell you that I’ll be in New York City. I don’t know if I told you I’m leaving Sunday, and I’m speaking at a women’s conference. So the title of my speech is from the Inside Out. So Healing. From the inside out. Healing. Right. So everything that we do inside, whether that’s nutrition or healing, how do we say through trauma and our past and everything else, change your total change your life. So that’s what I’m about. That’s beautiful transformation.

Jen Hardy [00:42:33]:

Awesome. And we’ll end on that. And thank you again, Roberta, so much for joining me today. It has been eye opening, and I can’t wait to try all these new things. So thanks.

Roberta Campbell [00:42:42]:

Thank you so much for having me, Jen.

Jen Hardy [00:42:45]:

You know, they say that beauty starts from the inside, and it really does, doesn’t it? I mean, we need to get adequate water and healthy food and all those things and then utilize some of the simple things she was talking about, like lemon on spots or brushing our teeth with baking soda. Just so many simple things that can help us feel better about the way that we look. And we can go out and we can get all kinds of fancy things done if we have the money. But fabulous is not about spending all the money, especially for those who are struggling. And right now, there’s a lot of people struggling. And my goal is to help you feel fabulous no matter what. It does not matter how much money you have, because we can find those little things that make us feel happy, that make us feel fabulous and really learn to feel good about ourselves, because that’s where it all comes from. And so I just want to thank you so much for joining us, and I want to invite you to join me. I have started a membership called the Gold Circle. And the Gold Circle is for all women over 50. And in there we have a mastermind for podcasting women over 50. And if you’re curious about that, you can go to Jenhardy Net and Gold Circle will pop right up. So you don’t even need to do any kind of digging. It’s right there. Jenhardy Net, I would love to have you come join us. It’s a very affordable group because, as I said, I totally recognize that times are tough. It also cost me money to run it, so it has a very small fee so that we can do that. But if you’re tired of being on social media with all these people, with the label of friends that you don’t even know and you don’t want to share all your things because they’re selling your information to businesses and doing all these things, this is actually on my website, and I’m not doing any of that stuff with your information at all. I very much value my privacy, and I value yours so much, and I value you and your time. You just took 45 minutes to be with me. That means more to me oh, my gosh. Than anything. So thank you. Thank you for gifting me your time. And I’m going to stop talking now because the show’s over. So thank you again, and stay tuned and stay fabulous.

And remember – you’re looking fabulous over fifty!! Feel confident & rock it!
