PRIVACY POLICY
Who we are
(We are a one woman show. That woman is somewhat tech efficient, and has no interest in collecting, storing, or selling your information for personal gain. Unfortunately, some techy things need to store some information in order to work properly. This outlines how that works.)
Comments
When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
Media
If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website. (I’d outline how to do it, but those techy things are always changing so just search and you’ll find it. Also, chances are you’re not uploading images here, so we’re all good)
Cookies
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.
(Seriously, I don’t even know how all that works, is that crazy or what? I will not store, share, or eat your cookies except for what that just said above.)
Embedded content from other websites
Articles on this site may include embedded content – e.g. videos, images, articles, etc. -. Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. (This was news to me! Apparently this is how the web works.)
These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. (Good night! This is a lot of data storing. Did you know this happens?)
Who we share your data with
If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. (I personally am not sharing anything. Hey, as I read this I’ve been thinking – should we really be working on better AI? It seems like these computers have a lot of info about us already!)
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. (Indefinitely seems like such a serious word…)
For users that register on our website -if any-, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time -except they cannot change their username-. Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your data
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. (Will I be able to find it? Well, I’ll do some research and figure it out, but man! It won’t be easy)
Where we send your data
Visitor comments will be checked through an automated spam detection service. Otherwise, your data will stay hidden where it remains a mystery. (I like mystery, and also have no idea either!)
But wait, there’s more…
Our website address is: http://www.jenhardy.net (which I’m guessing you know because you’re here)
(If you’ve gotten this far you really care about your privacy and I commend you for that. I truly don’t want to know or keep your personal data or share it with the world, so don’t worry about that. I cherish keeping as much of my own privacy as you do, and will handle yours with the care I use with my own information.)
Disclosures:
At times, we receive income from sponsors or advertisers in the form of free products, advertising fees, and/or monetary compensation. (but not very often, sad to say) All posts containing potential revenue-making links are designated as such with the words, “This post contains affiliate links.” Unfortunately the companies usually use web beacons or cookies in order to show you the ads they think you’ll like.
I will always tell you truthfully what I think about a product, and if I don’t like it, it won’t be on this site. (You might not like the things I do. If you don’t like something I recommend that’s a bummer, please let me know & I might just not share it at all, or I might. We’ll have to see if other people have the same experience. Are you having fun reading this? I’m having a bit of fun writing it, so hang in there, we’re almost done.)
Affiliate program are good because I can make a few cents, and they don’t cost you anything, but they do collect and keep data. (How much? That depends. On what? I don’t know. I wish they didn’t, but then they’d go out of business and then where would we all be? They don’t share that stuff with me, so please read their policies before you share anything on a new site.)
The Fabulous Over Fifty Podcast is part of the Amazon Services LLC Associates program and if you click an Amazon link I’ll get a tiny bit of compensation and you’ll not notice any difference. Win-win! (but they do have pesky data collection methods, so do your due diligence ok?)
(You’re a rockstar for finishing all this boring stuff. You probably value your privacy a great deal, and maybe should transition to some sort of very private browser. I use one, and also a VPN to stop this kind of crud in its tracks. I, like you, value my privacy, and wish I could just stop all this tracking stuff. Unfortunately, I’m not a coder and have to design this site with the tools I’ve been given. But I sincerely have no desire to track you in any way, shape, or form unless you give me your email address, and then I’ll send you emails that hopefully you enjoy. But you can always unsubscribe. Sure, you’ll break my heart, but you can do it.
Still here? Send me a message HERE with the word potato (that’s our special code word now between you & me) and I’ll get right back to you. You’ll also get $25 off the podcasting coaching program if you choose to do it, because you obviously like to study & should get rewarded for that.
Have a fabulous day!
Jen
